Veselka: Perfect Food For Cold Weather
The Times today has a great article about East Village staple Veselka. Last Saturday night, when it was near unbearably cold out, we made the hike up to Momofuku for some comforting, hot, nose-drippingly spicy ramen noodles. I couldn’t wait to slurp them up! Unfortunately, there was a serious wait (and not much room TO wait), so we happily tried Ippudo instead. Closed for the holidays. Boo. Undeterred (and after some blackberry searching), we hiked back over to check out the new La Lucha I had been reading so much about, where we got a table right away. However, after perusing the menu we realized they don’t have their liquor license. By this point, I needed a drink more than food itself, so, we..um…got up and left. Sorry guys! We’ll be back.
Over on 2nd Avenue, Veselka shown bright like a Ukrainian beacon and blessedly, we were seated pretty quickly. It’s not fancy, it’s loud, and it is actually very bright, but the food’s great. We shared the legendary perogies, which were stuffed to the max - chewy and cheesy on the inside, and perfect with a little sour cream and onions on the side. For my entree, I had the Beef Stroganoff and a crispy yet creamy potato pancake. My date had a lamb burger. All great. This place is legendary and I’m embarrassed I haven’t been there sooner. Mad, actually. Too many drunken late night stops for so-so pizza when I could have been having those Perogies! You’re on my radar now, Veselka. Ya tebe kohayu!
