This past Friday, Charlie and I went on a little excursion starting in our neighborhood and making our way on down to Chinatown (literally). I wanted to sample a little somethin-somethin from a few different places and he was up for the adventure! Great to do this stuff once in a while and remember how lucky we are to live in a place like NYC.
We started out at Hecho en Dumbo with a few margaritas, and some baked queso with chorizo. The chorizo had a little cinnamon in it, which gave it a really rich, exotic twist. Delicious and highly diet un-friendly. From there we wandered down to Peels, where we shared 6 East Coast oysters and each tried a cocktail. I went with a Rhubarb-flavored martini, but Char’s Spiced Colada hit it out of the park. It was like a slightly herby BBC. One is definetly enough, but that was exactly all we wanted.
Again, more wandering and we made it safely into Joe’s Shanghai before the rain really started to pour. I’m ashamed to say neither of us had been here before, but it was great! Noisy, smelly, busy and perfect. We shared the pork soup dumplings, some duck and some crispy beef. And like 4 beers. Disgusted by how much we ate yet?
Our final destination was Apotheke, where we met a few friends and shared a few royally strong drinks before making our way back home in the rain. I can’t say the night was cheap, or low-cal, but it was certainly memorable. And as Charlie said, we made our way from Mexico, to Alabama, to Shanghai, all in one night - only in New York can you make that happen! Next time you’re feeling bored with New York I highly recommend having apps and entrees at different places at the very least. It’s a great way to revel in just how spoiled we are to live here.
